The Midwest TQ Racing League presented by Vincennes University competed at the Shelby County Fairgrounds on Saturday night where Brett Hankins dominated the evening by scoring a “Clean Sweep.”
Hankins, of Connersville, driving his father Sam’s Zatkoff Seals & Packing/Speedpartz.com Kleine Triumph set quick time with a lap of 18.214 seconds around the Shelbyville, Ind. oval. He then won the Jackson Oil & Solvents Duel for Fuel for the fastest four qualifiers, and made a last lap pass on Caleb Faulkner to win his heat race.
Hankins started the feature in ninth place and quickly marched to the front. By lap five he had made his way into the top three and on lap seven he passed Corey Eaglin to take the lead.
Ronnie Combs, who had to transfer to the feature from the B Main after being unable to start his heat race, had moved up to third place by lap ten, after starting seventeenth. Combs, a four-time winner this season, got around Eaglin on lap eleven and began to track down Hankins, who had pulled away from the field.
A caution on lap fifteen, for Scot Quintel’s spin in turn one, bunched the field and allowed Combs to restart on Hankins rear bumper. When the green waived Combs pressured Hankins trying to take the lead. While Combs could get close in the turns Hankins would motor away down the straights. Combs looked inside Hankins going into turn one on lap twenty-one but the yellow waived for Kyle McIntosh who had stopped in turn four.
With a five lap dash to the checkers Hankins was too strong for Combs and held him off to score his first MTQRL feature win. Nick Speidel passed nine cars to finish in third place followed by Cody Kiewitt (who improved fourteen spots) and Chris Mann. Kyle Lux, Bobby Walton, Jon Steed, Chad Rouse and Quintel rounded out the top ten.
In addition to Hankins other heat winners were Mann and Lux while defending champion, and current point leader, Tate Martz won the B Main.
Combs, after passing fifteen cars in the feature, was the Pace Performance Coatings Hard Charger. Kiewitt, the highest finisher of the five rookies in the field, was named the Tony Stewart Racing Rookie of the Race. Faulkner, who broke a rear axle while running the track in for the feature, was the Duane & Sonja Alexander Hard Luck Driver. Hankins won the drawing for the $50 Jackson Oil & Solvents gift certificate.
The next race on the MTQRL schedule will be Saturday September 3rd at the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds in Columbus, Ind. with racing set to begin at 7:00 pm.
